Unfancy: The Capsule Wardrobe Movement in 3 Easy Steps

Unfancy: The Capsule Wardrobe Movement in 3 Easy Steps

Lately, I have been on this kick of taking things I own and making the most of them. It’s part of my Reconditioning Project (more of that later). Lately, my time has included automating and systemizing my life, so that I can spend less time on menial tasks and more on things that I enjoy doing. As much as I love clothes, I hate the process of deciding on what to wear. Too many choices sometimes make for too much time deciding on what to wear. In trying to simplify my life, I stumbled on Unfancy, a blog maintained by Caroline Joy Rector from Texas, that has gained a massive following for myriads of wonderful reasons but mainly because of one thing: Caroline built a capsule wardrobe that includes 37 pieces of clothing ONLY.

My goal these days are simple- How can I get more out of my life, with less stuff? To help guide you on everything that you need to know about Caroline Rector’s concept. Here are the 3 main items you should know.

Wardrobe Capsule: HOW “UNFANCY” WORKS

According to Caroline, you can think of a capsule wardrobe as a mini wardrobe that is made of only a number of pieces that aren’t just versatile, but also ones that you love wearing. Each season (summer, fall, winter, and spring), you clear the things that are in your closet except for some pieces that you will include to your capsule wardrobe. The golden number of Caroline is 37. Personally, I don’t think that you should get too hung up on the number because it will vary depending on the season. Your capsule collection should include a combination of classic items that you love wearing.

Capsule Wardrobe: THE “UNFANCY” BENEFITS

Having your capsule wardrobe will result in having more money, more energy, and more time for things that matter in life. By diverting your focus to more important things and only shopping once every season, you’ll save a right amount of cash on frivolous items which tend to add up. Caroline also said that by narrowing down her wardrobe, it resulted in her defining and understood her style more. She also felt that she always has something great to wear because she loves the items that are in her closet.

Capsule Wardrobe: HOW TO START

In her blog, Unfancy, Caroline posted a step-by-step approach on how to build a personalized capsule wardrobe.

Step 1: Choose only 37 items that are currently in your closet.
Step 2: Make sure that for the next three months, they are the only pieces that you will wear.
Step 3: Don’t go shopping for more clothing pieces because you already have everything you need.
Step 4: During the last week of the current season, you can start planning and shopping for pieces that are suitable for the upcoming season. Of course, the number of pieces would be limited as they’d go into your capsule wardrobe.
Step 5: Your total budget will be up to you. However, always remember that less is more.

Finding the Essentials

As you may already know, there are myriads of factors that go into purchasing essential clothing items. You’d have to consider the fit (fitted, loose), the style (length, pant style, neckline), and the fabric (rayon, cotton). To give you an example, I think that I look better if I wear V-neck shirts than scoop neck pieces. Try a wide range of styles, so you can determine the items that are perfect for you.
